Have you ever been on a road trip and stopped in a small town to see "the world's largest ball of twine" or some other such oddity? It just doesn't seem worth it once you get there does it? Well, the 35-minute drive east of Chattanooga to Sweetwater is worth it. This 4-acre underground lake is truly a marvel and registered with Guinness as the the United States's largest. Inside are a series of caves known as Craighead Caverns. A must see!
The John Muir Trail offers 18.8 miles of diverse terrain following the Hiwassee River. The first three miles were specifically designed for senior citizens. The trail offers great views of the Hiwassee River, seasonal wildflowers, birds and more.
