Bars & Cafes
One of the many, many bars in the multi-cultured city of New Orleans, Saturn brings back the charm of the good old days. It's a very popular place featured in several movies such as Ray and Undercover Blues and and various other media. It has also been visited by movie stars like Nicholas Cage. Live music is the highlight of the place, but there is also an old-fashioned juke box to keep guests entertained otherwise. Simply grab a drink and enjoy the night!
New Orleans is the place of blues and jazz and all that razzmatazz. At this barbecue lounge there is a lot of scope for visitors to enjoy both. The neatly grilled barbecue chops in vinegar sauce or the steaks dunked in spicy hot mustard sauce go well with the ales. After all these gastronomic antics, you can play ping-pong and work the extra calories off. The live jazz lingers long after you've left the Vaughn Lounge.
The cocktail crafters who brought the city of New Orleans Cure, have taken their skills downtown to Bellocq. This luxury lounge in Hotel Modern specializes in cobblers - combinations of wine, liqueurs, fruit, and herbs that reigned as the drink of choice in the era before the modern cocktail. In addition to the specialty cobblers, Bellocq stocks a large selection of Madeira wine, sherry, port, and hard-to-find beers. An open-air courtyard offers patrons a breezy place to enjoy their drinks on warm evenings.
Suis Generis brings you "food evolution" with a constantly evolving menu featuring house-made pasta, prime meats, fresh seafood, vegetarian choices and fabulous brunches. They have no set dinner menu, instead they create an ever-changing array of selections with local and international influences. The atmosphere is fun and stylish, but casual. The decor is funky and unique, with faux fireplaces in the booths, Barbies dolls, a padded quilted wall, and a 1970s "hand chairs." Their full bar offers a wide selection of wines, small batch liquors, artisan beers, and craft cocktails made from house-made syrups and nectars!
Breakfast in the Bywater is more interesting with the addition of Satsuma Café. This eclectic eatery features breakfast and lunch menus stacked with dishes made from fresh and local fruits and vegetables. Patrons can choose from hearty salads made with a variety of flavorful ingredients or thick sandwiches on ciabatta bread for lunch, and fluffy omelets or sweet muffins for breakfast. Add another component to the meal with a cup of freshly brewed coffee or a glass of house-made fruit and vegetable juices. - Bethany Culp
Bywater Bar-B-Que is located in an ancient building that was once a pharmacy. Its tiny open-air cafe features lovingly prepared Southern food complemented with Mexican flair. Several tables, a small bar, and paintings by a local artist create a homey casual feel in this off-the-beaten-path eatery. Good appetizer choices are the Mexican Skins or the Crawfish Quesadillas. Opt for the barbecue combo of ribs and chicken and arm yourself with extra napkins. Vegans should take note—they also serve an excellent grilled vegetable platter with a baked potato!
The modest surroundings and the simple white frame building housing Elizabeth's can be quite deceptive and is no indication of the delicious food on the platter. It serves a hearty meal whether its breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner. The 'Praline Bacon', 'Eggs Elizabeth', 'Redneck Eggs Benedict' which are poached eggs perched atop fried green tomatoes are to die for.'Calas' and 'Apple Crepes' are some of the house specialties. All in all, an unpretentious eatery for casual dates and outings.
In the mood for sipping on a few cocktails and listening to heart-warming music? Then Kajun's Pub is your destination! Unwind yourself after a busy week and tune up the jukebox to catch up on old melodies. You could also catch a glimpse of the local bands such as The Zydepunks, My Graveyard Jaw and The Soul Project. The bartenders are on top of their game, so order up your favorite libation and dance the night away.
Hi Ho Lounge is a great live music venue in the downtown area of New Orleans, the birthplace of Jazz. Most of the shows are live jazz and the atmosphere is of a casual local bar, where the crowd is fairly regular and knows each other. They also have a few options for food and the drinks come at affordable prices. A great place to hang out with your group of friends or to make new ones.
Located along St. Claude Avenue, Cowpokes, is one bar on the list if you're looking out for a calm and quite evening to sip a mug or two of chilled beer. Voted the 'Neighborhood Bar of the Year' and 'Show Bar of the Year' at the Gay Appreciation Awards, it is your typical friendly country bar that caters to the gay community. Raise your glasses to a toast at Mimi's in the Marigny. If the mention of Calamari with Chorizo, garlic and cream, Mushroom Manchego Toast with sherry cream mushrooms or grilled pork tenderloin makes your mouth water, don't think twice about coming here. Walk into Mimi's, who's chefs are culinary magicians. Try the cold tapas menu; Spanish cheeses with roasted red peppers, or Jamon Iberico con Pimiento (ham and red peppers on toast) are always delicious. Follow it up with dessert while enjoying the melody of live local music. Mimi's also welcomes party bookings for six and more. Call them for information on weekly events.
