Established in 1911 by presidential proclamation, this national monument protects and preserves the Devils Postpile formation, the 101-foot high Rainbow Falls, and pristine mountain scenery. The formation of Devils Postpile began when basalt lava erupted in the valley of the Middle Fork of the San Joaquin River and it is a rare sight in the geologic world, ranking as one of the world
There is no greater artist than the nature, a look at this monument will tell you why. A geological formation produced due to cooling down of hot lava that erupted centuries ago, Devils Postpile is, along with the nearby Rainbow Falls, a part of the Devils Postpile National Monument. It is a large structure of extremely symmetrical basalt columns that tower as high as 400 feet (102m) that formed some 100,000 years ago. The site is now a popular tourist attraction owing to the beauty of the rock formation, the rainbow falls and the serene wooded area that surrounds them.
